Massages aren’t just for pampering — they can actually help treat a range of health issues, according to research from RMIT University and the Australian Association of Massage Therapy (AAMT). The report, called Effectiveness of Massage Therapy, looked at 740 studies from around the world, published between 1978 and 2008, to see just how beneficial massage can be for your health.

Massages Can Help With More Than Just Sore Muscles

The researchers determined that doctors and nurses should consider adding massage therapy to treatment plans for all kinds of conditions — from back pain, anxiety, and stress, to nausea and even chronic diseases. The report found evidence that massages can:

  • Alleviate and prevent DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) from exercise.

  • Improve lung function

  • And improve overall recovery and relaxation

A Look at the Different Massage Types

The team reviewed all sorts of massage techniques, including:

  • Swedish and sports massage

  • Reflexology and shiatsu

  • Bowen therapy and lymphatic drainage

  • Myofascial release

  • Trigger point therapy

  • And even infant massage

More Proof Massage Really Works

Tricia Hughes, CEO of AAMT, said the research shows that there’s a growing body of solid evidence behind massage therapy as a legitimate treatment — not just a luxury.

“We hope this report encourages more research and helps health professionals see massage as a real therapeutic option,” Hughes said.

She added that the findings give massage therapists and other health practitioners a strong foundation to build on and support evidence-based practice in the field.
