When it comes to having the energy to get you through the day, you may think of energy drinks or other substances that are loaded with sugar to give you an energy boost. While sugar does give you that extra little boost of hyper energy, it is not actually very beneficial. After that initial sugar high, many people experience something known as a sugar crash, which feels like all your energy goes right down the drain, making you tired and disinterested in what you were previously doing. It’s important to implement healthier habits throughout the day to give you energy, including being mindful of your sugar intake.
Ketchup + Other Sauces
One of America’s favorite sauces to use is Ketchup. This is a staple item in the food industry. Whether you’re out to eat or you’re cooking burgers and hot dogs on the grill for a barbecue night, ketchup is almost always involved. Something you may not realize when you dip your fries into that tomato-y goodness is that, on average, one tablespoon contains 4g of sugar. That sugar isn’t just hiding in ketchup either, but in a lot of other common condiments that we don’t normally think of as “sweet”. A serving of barbecue sauce for example can contain around 8.5g of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 25g of sugar per day, so those condiments are already cutting into a huge chunk of your daily sugar intake, and you’re not even onto dessert yet!
Processed Fruit
When it comes to a nice bowl of oatmeal in the morning, you may be tempted to add cherries or pears from a jar, which contain that sweet syrupy sauce. Many of us may be led to think that the liquid in canned/jarred fruit is natural sugar from the fruit itself, when in reality, the sugar and syrup are added to improve the taste. It is still possible to get amazing-tasting foods with fruits, if you opt for fresh or frozen fruit over canned. By using a medley of fresh fruits in your bowl of oatmeal, not only will they taste fresher, but the sugar content will be significantly lower. Make sure you are still mindful of portions, though; too much of any sugar is not the best for your health.
Alternative Energy Boosts
When it comes down to it, you are not going to give up sugar completely. Sugar is in just about everything we consume throughout the day. It is, however, still important to watch what you eat and make sure you don’t go too overboard in one day. So enjoy that slice of cake, but maybe skip the ice cream on the side. The small choices you make will help your body look and feel better in the long run.
