Mobile chair massages & best companies equal a “win -win”

woman receiving a mobile chair massage - Corporate Massage KneadsNew lists come out each year featuring the top companies to work for based on a variety of factors such as benefits, employee satisfaction, advancement opportunities, company culture, and work-life balance. Google, Salesforce, Microsoft, Apple, and many other well-known companies (through LinkedIn data) consistently rank highly on these Best Places to Work lists. Many of these companies hire independent licensed massage therapists to offer mobile chair massages to their employees.

What do these companies have in common? They all offer corporate wellness programs to create a strong community supporting health and well-being to further the employees’ desires to achieve their workplace project goals. Let’s take a further look at the common thread and why so many seek employment at these great companies.

  • At Google, “the company obsesses about employee happiness, rigorously studying how to build the perfect team.”
  • “Salesforce took design advice from an unlikely source: Buddhist monks. They were visiting CEO Marc Benioff (above) and suggested that he add quiet areas to his workplace. So Salesforce listened, installing “mindfulness zones” and meditation spaces on every floor of its new tower. The cloud software provider is serious about wellness: “Employees can’t guide customers to success if they aren’t first taking care of themselves,”
  • ” Microsoft continues to be a magnet for job-seeking techies. On its Redmond, Wash. campus, the company offers restaurants, cafes, espresso stands (37 to be exact), retail shops, and a sports field.”
  • Airbnb is sought out “because of its culture, which fosters a “sense of belonging,” the company told LinkedIn. Offices are decked out with the sort of homey details any Airbnb guest would appreciate: lounge areas with oriental rugs, meeting rooms designed after popular rentals, and lots of house-made The company pushes employees to never stop “being crazy” and tries to inspire a sense of adventure by offering travel vouchers to experience Airbnb properties.”

Chair massage lowers stress

stressed office worker - chair massage maryland - Corporate Massage KneadsWhen employees do not communicate properly, it can cause misunderstanding, issues, and stress.  Deadlines, presentations, and social issues within the office can cause mountains of stress that interfere with productivity and employees’ emotional stability. 25% of employees in the United States think of their jobs as a huge stress in their lives, and often this stress can lead to cardiovascular disease, workplace injury, cancer, ulcers, impaired immune function, and more. Lowering your stress with a chair massage is ONE of the MANY benefits!

A study from Emory University revealed that stress is the second most impactful risk to medical expenditures and is one of the most common health issues in businesses. One useful and very helpful way to deplete stress within the work environment is to encourage work-life balance. This can be done through “lunch and learns,” where a speaker addresses common stress factors during employees’ lunchtime and explains practical ways of dealing with an undesirable situation and avoiding the infiltration of stress. Further, yoga classes and onsite massages are affordable and very viable methods to reduce stress and promote employees’ implementation of a work-life balance into their lives.

While many of the methods listed above can defeat stress once it has infiltrated the office environment, another way to avoid stress is to ensure that it doesn’t become an issue in the first place. One major underlying issue is faulty, or the lack of, communication. Especially about employee issues or ongoing, many managers and bosses are unaware of the outside stressors that plague their workers. With effective communication, managers can provide ways of alleviating stress within their employees’ lives by affording them opportunities to take care of their families, take a mental rest day off from work, or more. Further, it is important to listen to employees and hear what they think about their current workload- if they feel that there is too much pressure to complete a lot in a short amount of time, their productivity will wane and they will not be as efficient in completing tasks. Additionally, if the environment itself is stressful (with close quarters, loud noises, and surrounded constantly by technology), many workers feel more stressed and unable to produce their best product. Managers should consider letting workers sometimes work from home or be able to spend a few hours a week working away from the computer on other tasks that need to be completed.

Finally, another great idea for office de-stressing is bringing in an outside wellness program that can come talk to employees about health-related issues, can provide specific classes to teach practical ways to de-stress, and can even alleviate stress on-site by providing mobile chair massages.

Remember the “forgotten” office worker with mobile chair massage

two office workers talking - chair massage maryland - Corporate Massage Kneads

He/she sits at a desk all day long, hunching over computers because it’s his job. He/she types away, calling clients, organizing paperwork, selling products—all to help bring in the big bucks to his company, big or small. All the while, his/her head weighs down on his neck. The continual sitting at the desk crumbles down his spine. His/her fingers, curved over his keyboard, ache, while his wrists are threatened by carpal tunnel day in and day out. He/she is tired, sore, and hungry for a little more attention from the company he/she is [quite literally] breaking his back for. He/she is the forgotten office worker.

How would this forgotten worker like to be remembered? Maybe with a(n):

  • Onsite chair massage. It’d be perfect for rehabilitating his spine and improving his posture. Chair massage is even proven to increase alertness—massage is a win-win for the employer and the employee![1]
  • Personal training session. Our no-longer-forgotten worker will learn strength training tips from a professional. These tips will help him increase his body’s level of endorphins as well as lower his risk of disease and inadequate bone and muscle health.[2]
  • Lunch and learn. Healthy eating lessons from a Registered Dietician would help our friend reap the benefits of a healthy diet. He’ll gain more energy, strengthen his teeth, bones, brain, and heart, and will keep his weight under control.[3]
  • Chair yoga session. Most will enjoy the stretching, relaxation, and revitalizing energy…all while at work! Yoga poses will help him manage stress, improve his strength and flexibility, and manage pain better.[4]

One client sent us this review.

“I look forward to my next session.. and the one after that! Very attentive to problem areas… I can’t wait .. Seriously.”

Four facts about wellness programs and mobile chair massage!

picture of tin cans - chair massage maryland - corporate massage kneadsDon’t let communication of your wellness program get lost in translation. Many employers still remain concerned about their employees and their well-being. Wellness programs like mobile chair massage, yoga, walking clubs, and nutrition meetings are always helpful.

Here are the facts:

  • 95% of large companies offer some sort of employee wellness program
  • Only 60% of U.S. employees know about the wellness plan offered by their company
  • Only about 40% of those who know about their employee wellness plan take advantage of it
  • Four times as many employees are inspired to make healthy choices with a wellness program than without one

It is important to inspire personal wellness in the workplace. It not only draws in great employees but also helps those employees live up to their full work potential when they’re feeling their best. Here are some great ways to let your employees know about your wellness program…and encourage them to use it!

  • Help them to understand what exactly it is that you offer. If they don’t know what it is, they won’t use it.
  • Help them to understand how it will help them. Not only will it make them feel better; but it’ll also help them to cut back on present and future medical expenses.
  • Offer financial incentives to those who best utilize your programs. Everyone is driven by money; enough said.
  • Get rid of the medical terminology. Most people don’t know medical terms—and don’t care about them. Keep it simple and explain why each benefit is important.
  • Emphasize confidentiality. Health is a touchy subject for many; make being healthy as comfortable as possible.
  • Start conversations about wellness all year. Don’t just focus on open enrollment times; keep the spirit of wellness alive all year long!
  • Bring new and exciting programs such as mobile chair massage, nutritional counseling, chair yoga, etc. vs. the typical food platter which is often enjoyed and forgotten.

Posture and mobile chair massage

posture picture - corporate chair massage Maryland - Corporate Massage KneadsOffice workers exhibit poor posture daily; it has become more commonplace due to excessive hours working at the office and on computers. Mobile chair massage events are beneficial for those sitting at a desk all day.

As a massage therapist in a large corporate environment, each week I see the results of poor posture when clients (relax) sit in my massage chair for their regular chair massage.

Most often, clients request that specific (deep) massage work be done on the levator scapula muscle (the workhorse) in addition to the borders of the scapula (specifically the trapezius, deltoid, along with supraspinatus muscles.) These muscles typically take the workload (and aches and pains) of working hours a day at a computer.

Issues with poor posture include:

  • The increased likeliness of injury because of muscle imbalances. Certain muscles get short and tight; some muscles become too long and tense. The body starts compensating which can eventually result in injury.
  • Compression of organs; bad posture puts a great deal of pressure on our organs.
  • Shallowness of breath affects our focus and our emotional and mental states. Our immune system is compromised, and we get foggy.
  • Poor emotional and mental states.

The article from the Huffington Post states “Sitting up tall and with a good posture made everyone feel stronger, more focused, elevated, self-empowered, and more in control.”

Here are the things that you can work on:

  • Stretch your chest
  • Strengthen the upper back
  • Work on your back’s flexibility and your spine’s mobility
  • Stretch the hip flexors (muscles that help you bend)
  • Work on strengthening your glutes (butt muscles)
  • Stretch your hamstrings and calves

What activities can minimize the strain of sitting?

  • Sitting on something wobbly
  • Daily walking during breaks or lunchtime
  • Stretch your hip flexors (Google this for more details)
  • Yoga poses such as cat/cow (Google this for more details)
  • Corporate on-site chair massage at your place of work (of course!)

Little daily changes can make a BIG impact on your quality of life both in and outside the office.
