As we all know, a large portion of people begin to plan this thing called a “New Year’s Resolution” towards the end of the year. Goal setting, whether large or small, is a tangible outcome for the New year. I always ponder about these resolutions and wonder if people complete them or not.

The most common item that many try to achieve in the following year is “lose weight.” I know this in itself can be a hard journey but the motivation for a fresh start always seems to increase the interest level and commitment.  Meal plans, workout schedules, and hefty exercise plans are typically included in this goal.  Don’t fear, there are people out there who achieve these yearly resolutions and you can be one of them!

Start small!

One of the biggest mistakes people make is creating overly ambitious rules and regulations for their weight loss regimen. If you normally don’t care what you eat, it’s going to be very hard for you to cut out groups of food entirely. Let’s say that on a normal daily basis, you eat steak, potatoes, and green beans. You can’t tell yourself that you will only have salads for dinner from now on. It makes it much harder on yourself and makes your new diet become a chore. As you begin to slowly move into a more strict, healthy lifestyle, gradual changes will help when incorporating more exercise.  If you start with a five-minute workout each morning, for the next week, add one minute per day and see how you are with ten-minute workouts. If you feel this is a place for you, you can stop, but if you want to challenge yourself, you can keep going! Everyone has different levels that they are comfortable with and it’s okay to start small and work yourself up. Just like meal prep, it’s important to move up in the way you exercise as well.

Keep in mind that New Year’s Resolutions are here for your benefit and you should not be worried about other people. It’s here to help and be a motivation in the right step to a better you. So start slow and make sure you’re comfortable with where you’re at. Then you can slowly move on to bigger and more challenging obstacles to overcome. Five tips + chair massage eases sore muscles!

Old man winter is upon us and maybe it’s time to talk about muscle care, especially in the winter! When we think about our muscles, we often think that “care” means lifting weights, working out, and “bulking up.” However, it’s important to treat your muscles properly and to make sure that they are capable of the exercise and movement you do on a daily basis. There are a few ways that you can ensure that your muscles stay healthy (with chair massage) and active so that you can continue on your journey toward better health.

First, it’s important that you rest. Sometimes we can get caught up in working out as many days as possible for as long as possible. However, it is pertinent that you take a day of rest and give your body the relaxing time it needs and craves. Believe it or not, the road to strength and health is NOT through putting your body through the wringer at the gym on a daily basis. Make sure that you don’t just focus on one part of the body every day. If you want awesome abs, then do ab exercises every other day. Make sure that you don’t overwork a particular muscle group or your body in general- it needs rest for proper muscle development.

Secondly, always stretch. Stretching before and after your workouts is essential to gaining flexibility and relaxing your hard-worked muscles. Both static stretching (holding a position for about 12 seconds) and dynamic stretching (moving a muscle around) are great ways to get your muscles warmed up before exercising and cooled down after a nice sweat.

While this has often been seen as a “perk,” it should definitely be added to your essential fitness plan to optimize your results and give you wonderful muscle recovery. The darker it is, the more dehydrated you are and the more water you need.
