7 healthy wellness tips when not ABLE to enjoy mobile chair massage…

Employees are working now more than EVER due to COVID. The office hours are blurry when managing our daily work schedule, kids at home, and the LONG “TO DO” list. Sadly, chair massage requests have decreased as employees are working from home for the time being.

The question remains on how to best incorporate movement to decrease prolonged hours of sitting at one’s desk.  Sadly, many wellness programs that include on-site chair massage, yoga, Pilates, and fitness centers are not typically available with the current situation due to the COVID virus.

What are the other key activities that can help with wellness on a daily basis?

  • Increased movement
  • Healthier snacks (fruit, high protein snacks, etc.)
  • Smart computer habits
  • Soft relaxing music if enjoyed
  • Stretching routinely during the day
  • Increased water consumption
  • Short breaks between tasks to bring more clarity and focus

Half of the battle would be to remember to get up and move around. Movement is the often the key here and here are some tips to remember to go just that – MOVE!  Apple watches and cell phones both have settings that remind us to stand up and step away from that spreadsheet or project.  Virtual yoga stretches, short exercise videos help to create new ways to enjoy exercise right in our own office and homes.

Corporate Massage Kneads continues to think of all that have had such drastic changes and hope that we can all dream of happier and more normal days to come.

**COVID update**

Corporate Massage Kneads will look forward to the day when we can offer corporate chair massage when safe for all parties AND when employees are back in the office.

Sitting for chair massage vs. at your (at home) desk!

There have been numerous articles written and studies conducted lately that indicate sitting for prolonged periods of time can actually harm the modern American worker. Sitting in this way leads to increased stress on the spine which contributes to increased back pain. When offering on-site massages in a variety of locations (offices, manufacturing plants along with retail operations) it seems that Americans are sitting for much longer than their bodies can handle. I hear about the aches and pains when offering chair massage.

I have read that workers sit on average for MORE than six hours per day. Wow!  Many are encouraged to take walks and frequent breaks to combat prolonged sitting.  This is great and effective in theory but in reality, breaks and walks are not always the priority when workloads begin to grow.

Times are a-changin’!  Standing desks are becoming more used and of interest.  What is a standing desk? It’s a desk that allows for more movement to stand. There are many benefits of using a standing desk as an alternative to a regular desk such as more flexible movement, more activity, more calories burned, etc. Ergonomic tips and inquiries are on the rise!

A few customers that I have spoken to report reduced back pain, better energy levels, more flexibility, and more control of their office environment.

There are some considerations for the stand-up desk:

  • Ease into the new desk with a gradual increase of time as standing for long periods of time can be uncomfortable when you are not used to it.
  • Cushioned mats are helpful when using a standing desk because they allow for your joints to not be as stressed.
  • Adjust the screen and keyboard settings to have the screen at eye level for easy use and to provide for the optimal neck position.

Another welcomed change would be to offer an on-site chair massage therapist at your place of work! Although it does involve sitting for a chair massage, the benefits are great and match those listed with increased productivity, allowing for stress-relief, and relaxation.

Like massage, Maryland-based Corporate Massage Kneads offers on-site chair massage with an employee or employer-paid option.

Let us do all the work to allow your staff a welcomed change of pace with corporate chair massage!  Many clients have commented that working with Massage Kneads allows for easy scheduling and a turnkey operation and wellness program.

Sweat it out and then enjoy a chair massage!

This time of year, it becomes a major elephant in the room. We all do it. We can all see it. We’re all embarrassed about it.  What’s the big deal? Why are we all so embarrassed about sweating? Sure, we know that it’s virtually unavoidable and that there’s got to be some reason for it. Many work out year-round and should think about getting chair massage more often!

You probably know that it’s natural and that it cools us down, but did you know:

  1. Sweating can save you from kidney stones. It’s medically proven that regular sweating helps flush your body of impurities that cause kidney stones to develop. When you sweat, your body demands more hydration—fluids that help to flush your body of salt and calcium, which form kidney stones when built up.
  2. It can help clear up your acne! Acne is a result of buildup in your pores. When you sweat, your pores open up and release a lot of the buildup in them. As long as you clear your skin of the impurities before the pores close them back in, sweat is your friend!
  3. It rids your body of impurities (including modern pollutants!). Most people know that sweating lets natural toxins leave your body. What you may not know, however, is that sweat also effectively eliminates harmful pollutants like BPA from our bodies!
  4. Sweat or Neosporin? Sweating can also act as a natural antibiotic ointment! Sweat releases dermcidin, an antibiotic agent, from your pores. It helps to attack infections in minor cuts on your skin.
  5. It can improve your mood. Sweating is usually induced by exercise, which releases endorphins in your body. Endorphins help control pain, stress, frustration, and many other things that get in the way of your positivity. Exercising (and sweating while you do it) helps to put a smile on your face!

Looks like our elephant in the room is actually something worth talking about! Don’t avoid the sweat; let it help you!

Pandemic Office Ergonomics; 3 causes of pain with solutions

man sitting at a kitchen table with computer

For me, the most comfortable spot in my house is on my chaise lounge. It offers comfort and security during these shifting workplaces due to the coronavirus virus.  The lighting is bright with many windows behind me and this spot keeps me from other distractions in my home; teenagers working on schoolwork, noises from others, and our little dog, Jinx, that roams about.  All was well and good until several days of sitting there proved otherwise. The aches and pains of poor ergonomics took me back to my solitude and the poor lighting of my desk. I miss the days of offering chair massage in corporate offices. It kept me away from the desk and actively moving.

What are the common causes of continued stress while working in a different environment at home? Here are some common ones that can be managed with slight changes.

Three common causes of stress to the office worker:

  1. Comfortable sofas and chairs offer little back support which in turn taxes the shoulders and spine.
  2. Zoom conference calls prolong poor posture as there is no time to adjust your seating during the call.
  3. Cell phones contribute to posture stress that continues unless stretched and managed.

Solutions for these common causes of stress to the office worker:

  1. Move from the comfortable sofa and chairs to an office-type chair with more solid back support.
  2. Try different seating and locations for your next Zoom call to maximize support for prolonged sitting during these conference calls.
  3. When using your cell phone, bring the phone up by bending your elbow followed by looking down with your eyes, then the top of your spine.

Massage Kneads would welcome the opportunity to help you and your staff settle back into the office. Mobile chair massage is a wellness program that offers many benefits. We will be back to offering corporate chair massage when the timing is right for ALL parties.

Why “knot” offer a wellness program when your employees settle back into the office? With fourteen years of offering chair massage, we’ve “got your back!”

This testimonial says it all.

Great Refresher! “Nothing like getting a relaxing update on the shoulders and back from hunching over a keyboard. I needed it more than I thought I did!”
