Sitting All Day? Your Body Is Keeping Score

A sedentary lifestyle isn’t just boring, it’s a real health risk. Research continues to show that prolonged sitting is linked to dozens of chronic conditions, including diabetes, osteoporosis, and even certain cancers. If your workday revolves around a chair, your body is quietly paying the price.

The good news? It doesn’t take a complete overhaul to make a difference. Even small bursts of activity help significantly. Something as simple as a 10-minute walk can help restore circulation and improve vascular function that declines with prolonged sitting. In other words, your body responds quickly when you give it what it needs.

This is where smart workplace wellness strategies come into play, because let’s be honest, most employees probably aren’t going to start doing jumping jacks between meetings, but taking short breaks to prioritize wellness matters.

Why Movement Matters (and Why It’s Worth Prioritizing)

An active lifestyle does more than just “keep you in shape.” It protects your long-term mobility by supporting muscle strength, metabolism, and cardiovascular health. It also boosts brainpower, and better blood flow means sharper thinking, improved focus, and increased productivity (say goodbye to your afternoon slump).

Movement also supports lung function and plays a role in memory and cognitive performance. Add in improving sleep, helping you fall asleep faster and reaching deeper, more restorative rest, and you’ve got a ripple effect that impacts every part of your day.

Where Chair Massage Fits In

Chair massage is not a replacement for movement, but it’s a powerful complement. It targets the areas that take the biggest hit from desk work: shoulders, neck, and head. By increasing circulation and delivering nutrients to muscles, chair massage helps improve range of motion and reduce tension, making it easier (and more appealing) to stay active.

Employees consistently report feeling looser, less stressed, and more energized after sessions. And sometimes, the results speak for themselves:

“Soothing to the body, mind, and soul… I left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated and immediately signed up for another massage.”

That’s not just relaxation – that’s retention, morale, and wellness in action. Wellness matters.

Read our testimonials here!

The Bottom Line

If your workplace is serious about health, productivity, and employee satisfaction, incorporating simple, effective solutions like movement breaks and on-site chair massage isn’t optional, it’s smart business.

Corporate chair massage requires minimal space while offering simple scheduling and flexible payment options.

Because when employees feel better, they perform better. It’s that simple. Contact us to start your wellness program!
The post Wellness matters.

In addition to wellness programs like mobile chair massage, this blog details five 9easy) action items which help to maximize your productivity in the office.

A Washington Post article stated that “work is a marathon, it’s not a sprint. You really have to be there for a long period of time, and to do that, you have to take care of yourself.” So, how do we go about this? Mobile chair massage, yoga, and nutritional seminars are all cost-effective options that enhance personal wellness and encourage self-care within the workplace.

Wellness programs continue to rise in all types of businesses, and the payoff is highly valuable to employees and employers alike. The same article explains that “companies benefit from wellness programs — studies show that companies save $3 for every $1 they invest in health programs”. Evidence has shown that investing in employee wellness initiatives not only improves employee health and well-being, but also improves productivity and engagement, resulting in fewer sick days and a “healthier” bottom line.

“Whether it’s building meditation and yoga into the workday or providing a quiet room for a massage, full-service workspaces aim to make sure work isn’t the only focus, but when it is, it’s laser-sharp.”

In addition to wellness programs, here are a few other easy ways to prioritize your well-being while also helping to maximize your productivity in the office:

Add a plant to your office to improve air quality and create a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing workspace

Bring in a desk lamp to add more light, or to use as an alternative to unpleasant overhead fluorescent lighting

Switch out your office chair to one that allows for better ergonomics and posture

Add additional storage space for better organization, helping you to be more efficient and productive with your time

Slightly shift the position and angle of your computer monitor which can make a HUGE difference in neck and eye strain

Think about how your office would benefit from additional wellness amenities such as yoga, relaxation rooms, on-site chair massage, etc, and the ease of having these amenities on site, subsequently decreasing stress and improving productivity. Like many others, I say “Yes, please!”

This client just booked and received a mobile chair massage last week and updated us with their experience below! Read additional testimonials here!

Got the knot!!
“I had been seeing a chiropractor for about a month, but was still waking up hurting with a knot in my back, right between my shoulder blades. Janet found the problem area and worked it over for 15 minutes straight. When I walked out, I could feel the difference; the pain-free range of motion was amazing. Great work in just a few minutes!”

Feeling stressed out? Want to make a change in the New Year? Why “knot” consider scheduling a chair massage this quarter? Schedule YOUR corporate chair massage event for a little reprieve and stress-relief before we book up for the new year!

Corporate Massage Kneads‘ therapists offering chair massage in Maryland are experienced, fully trained, state-certified, and insured, taking away any worries from scheduling your on-site corporate chair massage event.

According to a recent article by Integrative Healthcare, “Nearly every person entering the field of massage therapy is fueled by a passion to help people better realize their capacity for wellness. As the connection between stress and declining wellness is repeatedly proven by the scientific community, massage’s ability to ease stress is becoming increasingly important. [Chair massage] therapists motivated to help steer people toward good health can realize this goal by bringing bodywork to one of the most prevalent locations breeding stress: the workplace.”

“Because massage therapy has been shown to reduce the physiological markers of stress and depression, companies recruiting massage professionals for their workers will have several advantages over those who do not.”

“Some facts highlighting the relationship between work and stress include:

According to the American Institute of Stress, workplace stress costs the nation more than $300 billion each year in health care, missed work, and stress reduction efforts.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, workers who report they are stressed incur health care costs that are 46 percent higher, or $600 more per person, than other employees.”

The Integrative Health Care article goes on to state that there is evidence of decreasing stress when given the option of an on-site chair massage.

Many of our corporate chair massage clients look forward to their assigned day for chair massage as it is regularly scheduled each week. Many corporate clients like this “easy button.”

One client emailed me earlier this month with another great testimonial:

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! “Janet, I cannot say enough how great our experience with Corporate Massage Kneads was. The Online Scheduler ran smoothly and was very easy to work with. Karen was fantastic, and I already have people asking when she is coming back.” Corporate client

Exciting news! Updated reports and statistics verify that alternative medicine modalities are of growing interest! This trend is continuing to grow both in and outside of the office. This is hopeful on many fronts as it shows the interest and commitment on behalf of major employers and individual employees alike in improving wellness initiatives such as yoga, chair massage, and walking clubs.

Massages can offer more than relaxation, studies show:

Massages aren’t just for pampering — they can actually help treat a range of health issues, according to research from RMIT University and the Australian Association of Massage Therapy (AAMT). The report, called Effectiveness of Massage Therapy, looked at 740 studies from around the world, published between 1978 and 2008, to see just how beneficial massage can be for your health.

Massages Can Help With More Than Just Sore Muscles

The researchers determined that doctors and nurses should consider adding massage therapy to treatment plans for all kinds of conditions — from back pain, anxiety, and stress, to nausea and even chronic diseases. The report found evidence that massages can:

Alleviate and prevent DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) from exercise.

Improve lung function

A Look at the Different Massage Types

The team reviewed all sorts of massage techniques, including:

More Proof Massage Really Works

Tricia Hughes, CEO of AAMT, said the research shows that there’s a growing body of solid evidence behind massage therapy as a legitimate treatment — not just a luxury.

“We hope this report encourages more research and helps health professionals see massage as a real therapeutic option,” Hughes said.

She added that the findings give massage therapists and other health practitioners a strong foundation to build on and support evidence-based practice in the field.

What other programs could be introduced within your office? Many employers have inquired about nutritional seminars, on-site corporate chair massage programs, chair yoga (which promotes movement and stretching at a desk), and on-site chair massage while employees are working at their desks, to name a few. All these programs and more are available and easy to coordinate to offer a wellness program that “works” at your corporate office. Wellness is ALWAYS in fashion!

Want to schedule your on-site wellness massage program? Have your HR department contact us to start your program TODAY!

There are many common and widely believed myths about chair massage therapy that need to be debunked. Sometimes associated with negative connotations or viewed as a mere “luxury” with no lasting value, individuals miss out on many of the benefits of on-site chair massage when they believe these myths.

While massage does relax muscles and feel wonderful, it also does so much more than that.

Read on to learn more about common myths associated with chair massage:

Myth 1: Massage therapy is only about moving muscles.
While massage does manipulate and loosen muscles, it can also relax areas of tissue connecting muscles, bones, and organs, otherwise known as fascia. It can also reduce swelling and make movement easier by moving fluids and loosening stiff joints throughout the body. Massage increases blood circulation, repairs muscle, and helps to move nutrients throughout the body, which speeds up the body’s healing process.

Myth 2: Massage benefits are merely temporary
While corporate chair massage does ease immediate aches and pains, it also offers long-term benefits. This is especially true for those working long hours within an office. Yes, muscles do have memory, and holding them in an awkward and uncomfortable position can cause long-term pain. Chair massage offers relaxation to continued strain of the upper back with specific relief of these stressed muscles: the trapezius, rhomboids, levator scapulae, etc. It also reduces muscle inflammation which leaves one feeling more comfortable for days afterward.

Myth 3: Massages are only effective if they’re painful
People often assume that a “good” massage is when the therapist “digs in” to the tense muscles that are the source of stress and discomfort. This should not be the case with ANY onsite chair massage! The professional chair massage therapist should “check in” with the client to inquire about his or her preferred pressure during the mobile chair massage. Too much “digging in” can sometimes cause even more aggravation and soreness, and can ultimately worsen the problem instead of actually relaxing the muscle. While muscle tension does typically need to be worked out (which can sometimes be initially uncomfortable), pain is not indicative of a more beneficial massage. Gentle and consistent massage techniques improve muscle tension and tightness, and does not require intense “digging in.”

Myth 4: A massage will make headaches worse.
Massage therapy is actually a very effective complementary treatment for migraines and headaches. By releasing tension in the head and applying pressure to certain trigger points in the neck and shoulders, pain signals are interrupted. Migraine symptoms are often believed to be induced by issues in the way that blood vessels function, and when massage reduces tension in these vessels that supply the brain, it creates a relaxed state that can increase blood flow and address the debilitating pain that so many people experience.

Myth 5: Massage will loosen muscles and inhibit exercise.
This is also false. While massage will ease tense muscles, massage is actually wonderful for the healing of muscles after working out and can greatly contribute to the muscle recovery that your body needs. If you work your body too strenuously, your body is going to react negatively, which could result in injury or pain. By easing pain and tension and improving body movement, massage is a very effective way to actually improve your exercise regimen.

Here are 3 reasons to smile about our corporate chair massage programs:

Our clients agree that on-site chair massage is a remarkable program to incorporate into a corporate office. In this competitive job marketplace, it is helpful to have something special that sets your company apart. There are lots of great perks to offer to help draw top talent into your organization, and wellness programs like massage are at the top of the list.

Chair massage increases employee productivity. Not only do chair massages help employees to be more alert and focused, but employees also give more to businesses and organizations that take good care of them. Additionally, corporate massage therapy decreases employee distractions from headaches, back pain, and anxiety, so they can be more focused on their job.

One of the other main benefits of on-site corporate chair massage is that the program automatically improves office morale. Employees appreciate employers who appreciate them. In addition to attracting top talent, those same talented employees will stick around when they feel appreciated. After you’ve worked hard to hire and train new talent within your organization, it’s important to show them they are valued and appreciated in your organization.

Maryland’s onsite chair massage company, Corporate Massage Kneads’ client says it best:

“Once again, I can not express enough what benefit and service truly mean for a healthy and productive day. I have gained many benefits from the service that I gave my co-worker a session. Now they too agree… Wonderful and a real bargain for the convenience and quality of service.” Another relaxed client!

Visit our testimonial page to read through more of our glowing reviews!

As a therapist for 24 years now, I can attest to the satisfaction and sense of relief following each chair massage. Employees experiencing lower back pain who received chair massage spent less on doctor’s visits and prescription medication than those who did not. Plus, some of the most expensive health care conditions are dramatically improved with regular corporate chair massage, thereby reducing your overall out of pocket healthcare costs as an employer.

Additionally, chair massage can treat carpal tunnel and tendonitis and help prevent repetitive stress injuries. These issues are some of the most common in the workplace, and when effectively addressed, decrease the frequency of Workers’ Compensation claims!

Corporate Massage Kneads is Maryland’s premier on-site chair massage company since 2006. We provide many varieties of massage and wellness programs tailored to fit your specific “kneads”!

Jump start your wellness program by offering mobile chair massage!

For many of us, life has felt increasingly stressful in recent years. I see many people outside enjoying the fresh air to clear their minds of worry and stress. I personally committed myself to walk 5 miles a day, but it led to muscle fatigue and strain. The temptation to ignore it and push through was strong for me, and I know I’m not alone. Ideally, finding a way to keep the momentum of exercising, while also working through muscle fatigue and strain without overdoing it is the best approach. Chair massage can also help ease sore muscles when starting a new exercise routine.

Some of us ignore the pain, and after a bit of “rest”, hop back up and act like their muscle are as good as new. But not having the proper rest and recovery can worsen your injury; it could turn a simple wrong turn into chronic pain, or it could make an injury even more severe and cause permanent damage. Many don’t know what is the correct response to injury from exercise, and are unsure of what they should do next. So, what should you do?

First of all, right after the injury occurs, immediate first aid is important in the acute phase. This can be completed by following the R.I.C.E. formula for recovery:

“R” stands for resting. Resting the affected area significantly depletes the chance of further injury and reduces the strain on the joint in pain. Not only will rest help with the initial sharp pain, but it can also save you weeks to months of further recovery by not stressing the injured muscle more.

“I” stands for ice. Placing ice on the injury slows blood flow to the area, and therefore allows for less swelling and (in cases of open wounds) bleeding. Ice can also help to reduce pain and inflammation.

“C” represents compression. Compression means wrapping the area of injury so that it has extra support. Compressing the damaged area also reduces swelling in the hurt area and holds muscles and joints in their place, which can prevent further injury when in motion.

“E” stands for elevation. Once resting, wrapped, and iced, place the injured area above the level of your heart so that your heart is forced to pump blood upwards. This also reduces blood flow to the damaged area, as well as swelling and inflammation.

Within the last few years, alternative methods of injury recovery have also been suggested, such as the MEAT recovery method.

MEAT stands for:

Movement. Gentle movement during recovery encourages blood flow to your injured tissues to promote healing. Let pain be your guide as to how much movement is too much, too soon.

Exercise. As you start to heal, you may begin to introduce specific, controlled exercises to help rehabilitate your injury. A physical therapist can show you what to do and how.

Analgesia. Analgesics are pain relievers. You may need to continue to use pain relievers during your recovery to allow for enough healthy movement. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice.

Therapy. Therapy encompasses the many long-term treatments you may need to fully recover from an injury. Your provider might recommend orthotics, bodywork, or other modalities.

Treat your muscles well and make sure that you handle your injuries with the proper care, which could prevent further damage and ease the pain.

Do you have muscle pain? Do many people in your office suffer from muscle injuries or general tightness? Did you know that a mobile chair massage is an excellent form of treatment for joint inflammation and muscle irritation?

When getting back into the swing of exercise, it’s important to take note of how your body is responding your workouts. Many people experience soreness when jumping into a more intense exercise routine or just starting back up after a break. This is completely normal and happens to most people, however, it can be a real pain in the neck (or back). Sore spots on the body can cause complications throughout the day that can make everything feel harder to accomplish. Chair massage can ease muscle pain, relieve back pain, AND increase your productivity!

Have a sore lower back? This can especially cause issues when you’re sitting at your desk during work hours. Trying to focus on your work can feel like a hassle with a constant pain in your lower back. Do you have pain in your legs or arms? This can be exacerbated when moving around or standing for too long, or by lifting or carrying heavy objects. You may try to ignore these annoying pains throughout the day, but chances are they will still bother you as you go about your work day.

The Best Solution

When your muscles feel tender and sore, the best solution to help ease that soreness is actually more exercise. That being said, it is not the best idea to complete intense workouts when you have soreness, but instead engaging in light workouts to help your muscles recover, such as stretching, yoga, or swimming. These will help ease your muscles soreness and should reduce some of the tenderness as well.

Yes, it is actually possible to help alleviate some of the soreness from a new workout. Experts say by that staying hydrated before, during, and after the workout you are already taking an important step to reduce the pain later on. Other helpful ideas include eating a healthy diet that is high in complex carbohydrates and protein. Eating high protein and carbohydrate meals before and after your workout will help give your muscles the energy it needs to heal.

Wellness programs like chair massage aid in recovery

Coming to work and experiencing sore muscles can put a damper on your productivity for the day. This can then lower your overall mood, and possibly even cause you to run late for deadlines and struggle to get your work done. The quickest way to help ease the pain of sore muscles and return more of your productivity is with a mobile chair massage from Corporate Massage Kneads. With experts who are trained in helping reduce problem pain areas and decrease stress, you’ll be feeling better in no time.

Of course, chair massages feel good! But do they have any other benefits beyond that momentary sensory happiness? What place could they possibly have in the workplace? According to a recent Forbes article, massage has a very productive place in every office! Chair massage isn’t just a way to spoil yourself and your employees; it’s an essential method of rejuvenation to keep your business running its best at all times. Corporate Massage Kneads is the premier mobile chair massage company in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia!

How can mobile chair massage benefit the employer?

Increase your productivity. According to research logged in the US National Library of Medicine, massage improves brainpower. Compared to people who received no massage, those who did receive a massage exhibited increased speed and accuracy in performing computations and other basic brain functions. Their brains were more alert and less stressed in both the short and long term.

Get your creative juices flowing. According to the experiences shared with Corporate Massage Kneads at our regular client sites, many clients experience sudden bursts of creativity after receiving massages. We believe this is because massage helps people to relax and see situations more clearly. When you can better assess a situation, you can find better solutions to problems. Massage can help you to see the bigger picture so that you can better strategize for your business and better perform smaller tasks to keep the business heading in the right direction.

Help you sleep and fight disease. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, “Massage therapy increases the activity level of the body’s white blood cells that work to combat viruses.” Sickness often either keeps employees from working or keeps them from performing their best. With better-functioning white blood cells, workers are more likely to be performing at the top of their game. Mobile chair massage also promotes deep sleep, which helps to restore the body and repair daily wear.

Reduce pain and stress. Massage helps to loosen up muscles that may have become tight due to everyday stressors. Desk jobs can be very hard to do well when one feels a lot of tension in their neck or back, so a neck or back massage allows them to focus more on their work and less on the pain.

What is the saying? A picture is worth a thousand words? This video of a shoulder, neck, and back massage should “speak” to all office workers! Many office workers enjoy the perks of on-site chair massage regularly.

Corporate wellness programs highlight the interest and continued results for lowering stress while increasing productivity. Corporate chair massage continues to become more mainstream for the seasoned and younger office worker. As pricing for on-site chair massage remains reasonable, many clients are venturing in for chair massage for a regular tune-up, weekly wellness activity or reward for a job well done!

After nine! years within the same large corporate office, I am always surprised to find a client who has never received a chair massage. Many who come in as first-time clients book again within the next six months once the mobile chair massage is received.

Imagine a quiet room with no other office workers, no phones, chatter, or distractions. There is a slight movement of air while soft music plays in the background.

Your massage therapist has already completed the health intake so it is now time to relax and soak in some rest during a busy week. The massage touch can be light, medium, or firm depending on your “knead” as the massage is received on the back, neck, shoulders, and other affected areas. It is a perfect 15-minute or 30-minute getaway with no interruptions.

The massage therapist gently approaches the chair with moderate pressure to best determine where and why your body is most tight. Hours of sitting whether it be commuting to work or sitting in front of the computer at work put continual stress and strain on your body.

The mobile chair massage session is easy to settle into as the movement is continuous with light, moderate, or deeper (often requested) pressure is applied along the shoulders, mid back, neck, and head. These areas of most requested as they take the bulk of stress while sitting at a desk.

The rocking motion has eased as the therapist works on the tired and sore spots to allow for relief and the reduction of stress. Typically, there is no talking unless the clients speak up with directions, requests, or comments. The music continues to hum along as background which enhances the sensation of calm during and after the corporate chair massage.

There is work to be done with varying pressure on those achy muscles that work tirelessly when in a stationary position most of the day at the desk. Tension and stress drift away with the welcomed touch of chair massage.

The time frame is filled with touch, minimal talking, and just the right pressure to allow for a mental break from the busy “to-do” list that awaits upon returning to the workstation.

Employees feel rested and ready to tackle the rest of the day and week with renewed hope of completing all that has to be done for a successful week.
