Avoid “tech-neck!” Chair massage helps!

chair massageEver wonder what is the BEST tool to avoid excessive neck strain and pain? Here are some answers in this blog. I suggest stretching and chair massage, of course.

As a mobile chair massage therapist for 23 years now, I can attest to the many comments about tight muscles and strain during routine office work. The clients continue to work on neck pain day in and day out.

With some simple stretching and ice therapy, the pain would decrease and mobility would increase.  Completing simple exercises would be valuable time spent to avoid the pain and sometimes tension headaches that are commonplace in the office.

Solutions for you

After learning about how bad posture can affect your mood and your energy, you might want to try a few changes in your lifestyle. The first one is relatively easy and can help show you results over some time. Changing your desk setup to promote proper posture is a small change that can help you in incredible ways. There are a wide variety of ways you could go about this, whether you buy chair pads to help you sit up straight or reposition your computer for easier access to the screen and keyboard.

Here is a list of some simple exercises:

Side-to-side stretching; moving your head slowly to the right side and holding for five to ten seconds. Complete three times. Repeat on the opposite side.

Ear to Ear Tilt; simply tilt your right ear to your right shoulder.  Using the right arm, GENTLY pull the head down to lower the right ear. Complete three times. Repeat on the opposite side.

Pectoral Stretch; Stand in the doorway, with the right foot in front while holding on to the door frame. Lean forward with a comfortable amount of body weight.  Hold for eight to ten seconds.  Complete three times. Repeat on the opposite side.

Spending years using bad posture is a difficult habit to break and many of us have yet to do so. This can cause pain in your back that is very hard to get rid of. To take a step in the right direction, I also suggest a company-wide chair massage from Massage Kneads.

Our experts will make sure to relieve pain from the common problem areas you have from bad posture. With this pain gone, expect to have a happier mood overall and increased energy levels! Request your free quote today and experience pain relief.

Is Cupping a form of massage?

chair massageThe summer Olympics are right around the corner in July! When watching the Olympics with Michael Phelps, many questioned the large circles on his back as he swam to take the GOLD in many events. Since then, many clients have asked our therapists, is cupping a form of massage?  If you have seen even a few minutes of the swimming, you will notice the round spots that adorn the backs of many high-profile swimmers.

This type of treatment is gaining more and more interest as high-profile athletes and celebrities alike seek this type of treatment and the results show when wearing these markings as a result of cupping.

Cupping is taught in local massage schools which shows how to properly position the cups to ensure proper technique.  Cupping is often referred to as a safe and legal way to help these world-class athletes (and movie stars) with body strengthening.

Is cupping considered a different type of massage? It depends on your provider, their certification in this field, and your tolerance for this type of treatment. Often massage therapists do offer this treatment in addition to typical massage given on a massage table.

What are some of the benefits of this type of treatment?

  • Joint Mobilization
  • Lymph Drainage
  • Athletic Enhancement

wellnessA sobering statistic from the Global Wellness Summit 2016 Research Report states that “in the United States, where the most extensive data are available, we estimate that the costs of chronic disease, work-related injuries and illnesses, stress, and employee disengagement amount to more than $2.2 trillion each year or 12 percent of GDP.”  The summary goes on to state, “Workplace wellness now represents a sizable and growing market worth $40.7 billion globally. Still, today’s workplace wellness programs only cover less than 9 percent of the global workforce.” This is an older statistic although it still rings true…

The better news is that wellness at work is an ongoing project for BOTH small and large companies to bring new energies and interest to the common office worker. The Global Wellness article continues with the following predictions:

  • Companies and governments will be highly motivated to reverse the current trend of an unwell workforce.
  • Wellness at work is a sustainable movement that will gain momentum across the world in the coming 5-10 years.
  • Workplace wellness programs – as we know them today – will disappear.
  • Individuals will take more responsibility for their wellness in the context of work.
  • Companies must adopt a culture of wellness as the default, not the exception if they want to attract and retain good people.
  • Companies will recognize that doing right by employees and the community is good business.
  • Governments will become more aggressive about mandating wellness, including in the workplace.
  • The healthiest workplaces will be a destination where people go to improve their wellness.

The three keys mentioned for success in wellness are better physical environments, personal interest on behalf of the employer to meet employee “kneads,” and the social and community aspects of building better and stronger relationships at work every day.

Corporate on-site chair massage is a program that can easily be offered at work with either the employee-paid or the employer-paid program.**

Wellness is all the rage!

The exciting thing about National Trails Day is that individuals can use the American Hiking Society website to find an event near them…or they can sponsor their own event and add it to the website’s event database. So, if you’re a gutsy leader, find a park near you and get to work; there is always something that can be done to help preserve the resources available to us. The sky is the limit for your event! Just be sure to register online so that others can join you in the celebration of your local wonder. If you’re the less adventurous type, there is bound to be an event around you that would be happy to have your help and participation.

Let local trails encourage you to be healthy!   The American Hiking Society “recognizes that foot trails and hiking are essential to connect people with nature, conserve open space, provide biological corridors for diverse plants and wildlife, and for the health of Americans and our natural environment.”

Four Ideas for Spring Wellness!

wellness with chair massage marylandSpring is in full swing, and it is a favorite season for many. As the temperature climbs and the warmth makes you want to spend all day outside, sometimes your body can have other ideas when you’re feeling under the weather, stuffy, and overall gross. For you to enjoy this beautiful season, here are a few tips to maintain your good health or help you beat back that oncoming illness that could leave you incapacitated for a few days. Wellness matters!

1. Stay hydrated. Many experts say that drinking 8 8-ounce glasses of water a day is essential to keep your body from suffering from dehydration, especially when you are busy and active throughout the day. If you ever feel an afternoon slump or a dull ache in the back of your head towards the end of the day, try drinking a big glass of cold water. Sometimes you might not even feel thirsty, but after a bit of hydration, you might be surprised at the burst of energy you can feel.

2. Exercise and stay active regularly to avoid injury. While “exercise” often carries negative connotations, it doesn’t necessarily have to mean regular exercise on a treadmill or at the gym. If that’s what you enjoy, then by all means, hit the gym daily and run or lift weights to your heart’s desire. However, being active can also mean taking a nice walk, dancing, getting off the couch standing on your feet, etc. While it is encouraged to perform a cardio activity at least 3 days a week, at least make sure that you are regularly active and not wasting the day away remaining idle.  Allowing for rest days helps you to recover from your workouts.

3. Get an adequate amount of sleep. Without sleep, your body will not be able to properly function and perform to its highest ability. Sure, you maybe can “survive” the day on little to no sleep, but it probably won’t be enjoyable and you will most likely not be able to accomplish activities to the extent that you could after a full night’s rest. Make sleep a priority. It’s the process by which your body heals after an exhausting day, so give yourself a break and try to get at least 7 to 8 hours nightly.

4. Eat healthy. While a dessert or chocolate bar is wonderful for a treat, don’t fill your body with junk food. Try to make vegetables and fruits an essential part of your diet, consisting of roughly 40-50% of your meals throughout the day. Vegetables and fruits provide natural minerals and nutrients that supply your body with good energy to keep your body moving and working.

Staying healthy is not something to take lightly. Especially if you live in a busy environment, whether it’s a stressful business setting, a big city like Baltimore, MD, or Washington DC, or a hectic home atmosphere, keeping your body in tip-top shape can be a difficult task. Stress lowers when receiving a mobile chair massage.

My client enjoyed her recent massage and sent this testimonial!

15 Minutes – Big Improvement
“Janet can do more in 15 minutes to help my neck and shoulder tension and anyone else has been able to do. I feel so much better today after only one short session.”

Make your body a priority, and take care of it. As the weather calls you outdoors, don’t let illnesses and unhealthy living hold you back. Instead, stay active, eat well, drink lots of water, sleep, and enjoy the springtime while healthy and able to fully experience this beautiful season.

Wellness at work = onsite chair massage!

While most can agree that workplace wellness is important in any type of work environment, most are unsure of what “workplace wellness” is and how to achieve that in the office. Below are some wellness suggestions from a very helpful and detailed “101 Ways to Wellness” WELCOA publication that sheds some light on how to efficiently and effectively provide a healthy environment for all employees. Chair massage can always be considered one!

First of all, there are different categories of wellness. Some of them include nutrition and weight management, stress management, family and safety, financial wellness, programming, program promotion, and more.

As a company that seeks to bring relaxation and ease into an otherwise typically stressful environment, this post is going to primarily focus on integrating workplace wellness tips concerning stress management.

First of all, one effective way to manage stress is through the encouragement of time management. Interruptions can often take up to 50% of the average worker’s day, with 80% of these interruptions typically rated by employees as having little to no value. One way to inspire time management is through an office PowerPoint discussing prioritization, the benefits of routine, and more. Bringing in a wellness specialist to host a forum about time management could also be a great option for your office.

Another great way to improve workplace wellness is through the fostering of a family-friendly environment in the workplace. Leisure time today is estimated at around merely 19.5 hours a week, which is often not enough for employees wanting to partake in the lives of their kids, their friends, their parents, and other relationships. Try to ensure that your office offers part-time, flextime, job-sharing, and other options to allow for more leisure time for employees.

Thirdly, make sure that everyone has access to information about mental health, including depression. Close to 10 million American adults have been diagnosed as seriously depressed. However, with effective treatment, most are capable of returning to their normal lives. Providing employees with the proper information can be a great resource for workers suffering from mental illness, like depression, and can make a serious difference in their process of recovery.

Also, another program to offer is onsite chair massage. While less than 10% of employers offer massage, 60% of employees relax with a corporate chair massage when offered at the office. Hosting a monthly massage for employees, either during lunch or throughout the workday, can go a long way in the reduction of stress and the increase in productivity.

Additionally, the support of employees in taking leisure time can significantly deplete stress and can heighten motivation throughout the entire office. In the past 20 years, employees have added an average of over 150 hours to their annual working and commuting time, and with this increase in work, many employees don’t often have a retreat. Creating a “leisure room” for workers to recharge could make a serious difference in office productivity and stress management.

If you are thinking about implementing some of these tips for workplace wellness and stress management, consider calling CEO Janet Constantino at 404-604-3221 and bringing in one of our massage therapists or Special Providers to bring relaxation and information about stress reduction.
