With so many changes in recent years, many of us have felt a shift, especially when working longer hours from makeshift home offices and having a harder time setting boundaries between our work and personal lives. Even without the daily movement of commuting or walking through an office, the body still has to adapt to long hours of sitting, often in less-than-ideal setups.

On the weeks that I work in my office more than on-site offering massage I notice my own body feels the effects of more prolonged sitting. It’s an obvious reminder of how important consistent movement and posture awareness truly are.

While sitting throughout the workday is unavoidable for many of us, small daily adjustments can make a meaningful difference. Here are some simple ergonomic tips to help reduce stress and strain on the body.

Taking small breaks more often
Short, frequent breaks throughout the day can significantly reduce fatigue and tension. Set reminders on your phone to step away briefly in the morning, at lunch, and in the afternoon. These moments of movement add up over time and support both body and mind.

Increase daily movement
With more time spent sitting, the impact on the body is greater without some form of regular movement. Whether it’s a walk outside, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or simply standing and stretching for a few minutes every hour, intentional movement helps counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting. Even 20 minutes a day of cumulative light activity can make a difference.

Adjust your posture throughout the day
There is no single “perfect” posture, instead, the key is variety and awareness. While working, aim to sit upright with feet flat on the floor and shoulders relaxed. When resting, allow your body to recline and stretch. When driving, adjust your seat so you are comfortably upright with proper support and alignment. These small adjustments throughout the day can significantly reduce strain on the neck, shoulders, and back.
